Sometimes we will be tested by God, and we will be tested in our faithfulness and love for Him. Sometimes He just wants to check if we love Him for the right reasons, just like He did with Job.
The devil claimed that Job was good, faithful, and serving God just because of the comfort and the benefits that came with it. So God allowed the devil to bring difficulties, pain, and struggles on him, to test Job’s faithfulness and prove to the devil that he was a man who really loved God, and a man of honor and integrity who was faithful because of his love for God, not for what God could do for him.
Job was the kindest man on earth, but still God put Him through fire and difficulties and tested His faithfulness and strength, and He gave Him double reward for His former shame and trouble after he had passed the test.
Imagine that you are a millionaire and you have a partner. At one point you would want to ask yourself if your partner loves you for you, or if she loves you just for what you can do for her and for your material wealth. You wonder: Would she leave you the day you lost your wealth? Or would she stick with you if you were to go through sickness, poverty, and difficult times?
Sometimes God will test if we love Him only for what He can do for us or if we really love Him for who He is and for what He represents.
Sometimes God will stop giving you everything you want and give you some opposition and difficult times when things don’t always go your way. And it’s at these times God can really check your faithfulness and love towards Him and see if your heart is really true.
The Story Of Job
The LORD said to Satan, “Have you considered My servant Job? For there is no one like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, fearing God and turning away from evil.”
Then Satan answered the LORD, “Does Job fear God for nothing? Have You not made a hedge about him and his house and all that he has, on every side? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions have increased in the land.
But put forth Your hand now and touch all that he has; he will surely curse You to Your face.” Then the LORD said to Satan, “Behold, all that he has is in your power, only do not put forth your hand on him.” So Satan departed from the presence of the LORD.
Then Satan was allowed to test Job; he was allowed to put his hand on his possessions, but not Job himself. It was a test of character, to see if Job still loved God without all the blessings and favors God had given him.
The devil tried and tested him in all the ways he could and destroyed almost all that he had, but still Job loved God, and he passed the test of having a right heart towards Him.
Then God restored his fortune and blessed Him with twice as much as he had before the test, and He will reward you as well if you are faithful and patient and wait with a good attitude.
Then Job arose and tore his robe and shaved his head, and he fell to the ground and worshiped. He said, “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked I shall return there. The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away. Blessed be the name of the Lord.” Through all this Job did not sin nor did he blame God.
The Lord restored the fortunes of Job when he prayed for his friends, and the Lord increased all that Job had twofold.
