Your Calling Is Greater Than The Criticism You Get From People

Jesus said in Mark 6:4 that “A prophet is not without honor except in his own town, among his relatives and in his own home.”

It’s often difficult for the people closest to us to accept it when we change our lives and when we try to live a better, godlier and more righteous life. It’s uncomfortable for them when we go from living a “normal” and “acceptable life” in the eyes of men, towards trying to follow our calling and live a life that is more acceptable in the eyes of God.

Change is always uncomfortable in general, and it’s especially difficult for people around you who are living in sin and who get convicted by your new and better way of living.

They instinctively know that the way they are living is wrong, and they feel even worse about it when they see you trying to live a right life. They know that they should change their lives, but they are too comfortable in sin and ignorance to want or try to change. That’s why it’s important to understand and know that your calling is greater than the criticism of the people around you, and that the opinion of God is more important than the opinion of men.

People will always have something to say about you and the way you are living, but if you learn to value God’s opinion more than the opinion of those around you, then it will hurt less when they don’t approve of you or the things you do.

When Jesus was starting his ministry and was teaching in the synagogues in his own hometown, people criticized him and not everybody approved of him or liked the things he did or said. Because they knew him and his family they were thinking “How could this little boy we’ve known since he was little, do and say these great things? How can he be the son of God?”

Mark 6:1 says: “Jesus left there and went to his hometown, accompanied by his disciples. When the Sabbath came, he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were amazed.”

“Where did this man get these things?” they asked. “What’s this wisdom that has been given him? What are these remarkable miracles he is performing? Isn’t this the carpenter? Isn’t this Mary’s son and the brother of James, Joseph,a Judas and Simon? Aren’t his sisters here with us?” And they took offense at him.”

Since they “knew” him and had known him since he was little they underestimated him, who he was and the things he could do.

You’re not alone, and you’re not the only one struggling with being accepted by your friends or family or the people around you. No you’re not normal and yes you are different, and that is a good thing, because God has not called us to be like the world.

God has called us to be different, special, unique and different from the world and the people and the things in it. We are supposed to be in the world but not of it.

God has chosen You out of this world, and to walk the narrow path in life that leads to Him and that leads to life. Choose to follow God, choose the Narrow Path, choose Life so that you and your children may live a good life in the Promised Land.

Deuteronomy 30:19
This day I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live

Deuteronomy 14:1:
For you are a holy people to the LORD your God, and the LORD has chosen you to be a people for His own possession out of all the peoples who are on the face of the earth. You shall not eat any detestable thing.

John 15:19

If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you.

John 15: 21

They will treat you this way because of my name, for they do not know the one who sent me. If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not be guilty of sin; but now they have no excuse for their sin. Whoever hates me hates my Father as well. If I had not done among them the works no one else did, they would not be guilty of sin. As it is, they have seen, and yet they have hated both me and my Father. But this is to fulfill what is written in their Law: ‘They hated me without reason.’

Romans 12:2
Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is–his good, pleasing and perfect will.

John 4:4

You are from God, little children, and have overcome them; because greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world. They are from the world; therefore they speak as from the world, and the world listens to them. We are from God; he who knows God listens to us; he who is not from God does not listen to us. By this we know the spirit of truth and the spirit of error.

1 John 2:15

Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them.

1 Corinthians 1:27

But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong.

Matthew 7:13

Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is broad that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter through it. For the gate is small and the way is narrow that leads to life, and there are few who find it.
